Fluorosis is a condition that causes white or brown spots on the teeth. It is caused by too much fluoride exposure during the development of teeth, either from drinking water with high fluoride levels or from using too much fluoride toothpaste.
The severity of fluorosis depends on how much fluoride was consumed during tooth development. Mild fluorosis may cause only faint white spots, while moderate to severe fluorosis can cause brown or black spots and pitted enamel.
There is no cure for fluorosis, but there are treatments that can improve the appearance of the teeth. These treatments include:
- Teeth whitening: This can be done in-office or at home. It uses chemicals to remove surface stains, but it may not be effective for severe fluorosis.
- Dental bonding: This is a procedure in which the dentist fills in the brown spots with tooth-colored resin.
- Dental veneers: These are thin shells that are bonded to the front of the teeth. They can cover up even severe fluorosis.
- Dental crowns: These are caps that are placed over the entire tooth. They are the most permanent option, but they are also the most expensive.
